AI in One Minute
What is AI?
AI is a computer program trained on a huge amount of information. Think of it like a washing machine: you do not need to know how the drum spins to get clean clothes. You just press a button. AI is the same. Type a question, get an answer.
β What it can do for you
- βοΈ Write letters, emails, and thank-you notes
- π Explain complicated things in simple terms
- π³ Suggest recipes with ingredients you have
- πΏ Give gardening, travel, and hobby advice
- π Summarise long articles into key points
β What it cannot do
- It is not always right. Always check important facts.
- It is not a doctor. Use it to prepare GP questions, not replace them.
- It does not know you unless you tell it about yourself.
You are already using AI
Autocorrect on your phone? AI. Spam filter in your email? AI. Google Maps finding the fastest route? AI. Netflix suggestions? AI. The difference now is you can talk to it directly.
Remember: AI is a tool. You are in control.

Your First Conversation: Step by Step
Open your web browser (Chrome, Safari, or Edge, whichever you normally use)
Go to chat.openai.com and type it into the address bar at the top
Click "Sign up" and use your email address. Create a password.
Type this in the box at the bottom: "Explain artificial intelligence to me like I am completely new to technology."
Press Enter and wait a few seconds. Read the response.
If the answer is too long, say: "Can you make that shorter, about 3 sentences?"
β οΈ Important
The free version of ChatGPT is all you need. Do not pay for anything. If it asks you to upgrade, just close the popup or click "Stay on Free."
Stuck? Our Try It Yourself page has more detail, or ask a family member to help with step 2.

10 Things to Try Right Now
Copy any of these word for word into ChatGPT. Just type it exactly as it appears below.
"Write a polite but firm complaint letter to my energy company about an incorrect bill"
"What garden jobs should I do this month in the Midlands?"
"What is a good recipe for two people using chicken and whatever vegetables I have?"
"Write a thank-you note for my neighbour who looked after my cat while I was away"
"I have a pain in my knee that gets worse going downstairs. What questions should I ask my GP?"
"Explain how to use WhatsApp step by step, as if I have never used it before"
"Write a birthday message for my 10-year-old grandchild who likes dinosaurs"
"What are some good day trips within an hour of Milton Keynes?"
"Summarise this in 3 bullet points:" then paste any long article or email
"What is the best way to remove a red wine stain from a cream carpet?"
Just talk naturally. If the answer is not right, say "that's not quite right" and it will try again, just like talking to a helpful friend.

π 5 Golden Rules to Stay Safe
Print this page and keep it next to your computer. For more detail on any of these, see our full Stay Safe guide.
Never share personal details
No bank details, passwords, NHS number, or home address. Ever.
Do not trust it blindly
AI can sound confident and be completely wrong. Always check important facts with a real source.
It is not a doctor
AI can help you prepare questions for your GP, but never use it instead of medical advice.
Watch for scams
If someone calls claiming to be your bank and sounds too perfect, it might be AI-generated. Hang up and call your bank directly.
You are always in control
You can close the tab at any time. Nothing you type commits you to anything. You cannot break it.
