How to Delete Your ChatGPT History and Protect Your Privacy

25 February 20264 min readBy Rex Blackwell

Quick Summary: This guide provides simple, step-by-step instructions for deleting your past conversations with ChatGPT. You will also learn how to turn off history for future chats and understand what data OpenAI (the company behind ChatGPT) stores, giving you more control over your digital privacy.

ChatGPT saves your conversations by default. That's worth knowing, especially if you've discussed anything personal or asked questions containing private details. The good news is that deleting them is simple, and you can also stop new chats from being saved at all. If you are unsure what to avoid sharing in the first place, our guide on what not to tell ChatGPT is worth reading first.

Why Delete Your ChatGPT History?

By default, ChatGPT saves your conversations. The company uses them to train its AI models to become more accurate and helpful. While this is generally anonymous, you might have discussed personal topics or asked questions containing private details. Deleting your history ensures this information is not stored and gives you peace of mind.

How to Delete Individual Conversations (Step-by-Step)

If you just want to remove one or two specific chats, you can do so easily on the ChatGPT website.

  1. Log in: Go to the ChatGPT website and log in to your account.
  2. Find Your Chats: On the left-hand side of the screen, you will see a list of your previous chats, usually named after the first question you asked.
  3. Select and Delete: Hover your mouse over the chat you want to delete. You will see some icons appear. Click on the rubbish bin icon to delete the conversation. A tick will appear to confirm it has been deleted.

How to Turn Off Chat History for Future Chats

If you would rather ChatGPT didn't save any of your conversations going forward, you can turn the feature off completely. This is like using the 'private browsing' or 'incognito' mode on your web browser.

  1. Log in: Go to the ChatGPT website.
  2. Go to Settings: At the bottom-left of the screen, click on your name, then click on 'Settings'.
  3. Data Controls: In the settings window, click on 'Data Controls' on the left.
  4. Turn Off History: You will see an option called 'Chat history & training'. Simply click the green toggle button to turn it off. It will turn grey to show it is disabled.

With this setting turned off, new conversations will not be saved to your history or used for training. They will be deleted after 30 days.

What About Temporary Chats?

A recent feature is 'Temporary Chat'. If you start a new chat, you might see a dropdown menu at the top of the main chat window. If you switch this from 'ChatGPT' to 'Temporary Chat', that specific conversation will not be saved in your history, even if your main settings have history turned on. It's a quick way to have a one-off private conversation.

FAQ

If I delete my history, is it gone forever?

Yes, when you delete a conversation from your history, it is permanently removed from your view and from OpenAI's main systems. For safety reasons, they may keep a copy for up to 30 days in a separate backup before it is permanently erased.

Does turning off history affect how well ChatGPT works?

No, it will not make the AI less capable. The only difference is that the AI will not remember things you have discussed in previous conversations, as there will be no history to refer back to. If you are curious about what data AI tools can access more broadly, our article Is AI listening to me? covers this clearly.

Can I get my conversations back after deleting them?

No, once a conversation is deleted, it cannot be recovered. Be sure you don't need to refer back to it before you delete it.
