Yes, for most things. Claude works well for writing letters, drafting emails, asking questions about health or travel, getting help with recipes, and reading long documents you'd like summarised. Anthropic, the company behind Claude, was founded specifically to research how to make AI safer. That gives it a different character from some competitors.
The risks fall into two categories: sharing information you should not share, and trusting answers you should not trust without checking. Both are manageable once you know what to watch for.

What Does Anthropic Do With Your Conversations?
When you type a message into Claude, Anthropic receives and stores it on their servers. On the free and consumer paid plans, those conversations can be used to improve future versions of Claude unless you opt out.
This is how many online services work, but it involves more detail than most people expect. Every message you type, and every reply Claude gives, is held on Anthropic's servers. It is not stored only on your device.
According to Anthropic's data protection guidance, staff cannot access your conversations as a matter of routine. Access is restricted to designated team members dealing with safety or legal matters, and it is logged. The system uses encryption to protect your data both while it travels and while it is stored.
On retention: if you have a free or Pro account and you have opted in to training (which is the default), Anthropic keeps your conversations for up to five years. What Should You Never Type Into Claude?
The same things you would not send in an email to a stranger.
- Passwords or security codes. No AI tool needs these for any legitimate reason.
- Bank or card details. Account numbers, sort codes, PINs.
- Your NHS number or National Insurance number. These are sensitive identifiers that cannot easily be changed if misused.
- Passport or driving licence numbers. Treat these like bank details.
- Other people's private information. Do not paste personal details about family members without their knowledge.

Can You Stop Claude From Using Your Conversations?
Yes. In your Claude account, go to Settings and look for Privacy. There you will find a toggle to turn off training. Once switched off, Anthropic will no longer use your future conversations to improve the AI. Your messages are still held temporarily for 30 days, then deleted.
If you are on a Claude Team or Enterprise plan, training is switched off by default. You do not need to change anything.
You can also delete your conversation history at any time. Open a previous chat, click the options menu, and select delete. You can export all your data as a file if you would like a copy.
Is Claude Safe to Use in the UK?
Claude is available to UK users, and UK data protection law applies to how your information is handled. The UK General Data Protection Regulation, or UK GDPR, gives you rights over your personal data, including the right to ask what is held about you and the right to have it deleted.
The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) is the UK's data protection regulator. It has been active in assessing AI services and their compliance with UK law. How Does Claude Compare to ChatGPT for Safety?
Both Claude and ChatGPT are broadly safe for everyday use. The differences are in their privacy defaults and the company behind them.
Anthropic, which makes Claude, describes safety as its founding mission. It developed something called Constitutional AI, a method that trains Claude to evaluate its own responses against a set of principles before replying. This means Claude has built-in reasoning about what is and is not appropriate to say.
OpenAI, which makes ChatGPT, has similar safety measures but a different history and emphasis. Practically speaking, both tools handle your data in comparable ways on consumer plans: each lets you opt out of training, and each encrypts your conversations.

This is one of the more practical questions, and it matters. Sharing a tablet or computer with a partner, family member, or anyone else means the main risk is not Claude itself but your account staying logged in.
Leaving Claude open on a shared screen lets the next person read your conversations. They cannot reach Anthropic's servers, but what is on the screen is visible to anyone nearby.
Simple steps to protect yourself on a shared device:
- Sign out of Claude after each session. There is a sign-out option in the menu at the top right.
