Is Meta AI Safe? What You Need to Know
Meta AI appeared in WhatsApp uninvited. A plain English guide to what it sees, what it stores, and a scam using its name to watch for.

Quick answer: Meta cannot read your ordinary WhatsApp messages. Your conversations remain end-to-end encrypted and Meta AI has no access to them. It only sees messages you send directly to the Meta AI chat or by typing @MetaAI. If you do not use Meta AI, it cannot access anything. Conversations you do have with Meta AI are stored by Meta. For complete privacy, WhatsApp's Incognito Chat mode means even Meta cannot read your conversation. One separate warning: firms calling themselves "Meta AI Trading" have nothing to do with Meta and are flagged by the UK's financial regulator as a scam.
If you opened WhatsApp recently and found a "Meta AI" contact you never added, you did not do anything wrong. Meta rolled this out to all WhatsApp users worldwide without asking. It just appeared. Most guides about Meta AI assume you chose to use it. Many of our readers didn't. They just found it there and wanted to know if it was a problem.
We looked into what Meta AI can and cannot actually access, and tested the settings ourselves. Here is what we found, written for people who use WhatsApp to stay in touch with family, not for software developers. If you are worried about AI tools more broadly, our ChatGPT safety guide covers similar ground for other tools.
What Is Meta AI and How Did It Appear in WhatsApp?
Meta AI is an AI assistant built by Meta, the company that owns WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram. You can type questions to it much like you would to ChatGPT. Ask it to suggest a recipe, help you write a birthday message, or explain something confusing. It appears as a contact in your WhatsApp or as a small circle icon near the top of the screen.
It showed up automatically because Meta decided to add it for all WhatsApp users from 2024 onwards. You did not invite it. Nobody did. WhatsApp's help centre explains what Meta AI can access if you want the official account, though it is written for a broad audience rather than someone encountering this for the first time.
The thing to understand is that having Meta AI in your WhatsApp is not the same as using it. Until you open the Meta AI chat and send it a message, it has no contact with your account at all.
Can Meta AI Read My WhatsApp Messages?
No. Your regular WhatsApp messages (the ones you send to family and friends) are end-to-end encrypted. Meta AI has no access to them. It can only see messages you choose to send directly to it, either by opening the Meta AI chat or by typing @MetaAI in a group conversation.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation, a well-regarded privacy organisation, confirmed in September 2025 that standard WhatsApp messages between users stay fully encrypted regardless of Meta AI being present in the app. That encryption does not change. What is not encrypted is any message you send directly to Meta AI. That is the line worth knowing.
So if you and your daughter are messaging about the weekend, Meta AI cannot read it. If you open the Meta AI chat and type a question to it, that is different.
What Does Meta AI Store When You Chat with It?
If you do send messages to Meta AI, those conversations are stored by Meta in the cloud. Malwarebytes described standard Meta AI conversations in May 2026 as "cloud-based, potentially readable by Meta and accessible through legal orders or security breaches." Meta may also use them to improve its AI systems.
If your Facebook or Instagram account is linked to your WhatsApp, Meta may use your profile (your age, interests, or general location) to shape what Meta AI says back to you. That is separate from your private messages, but worth knowing.
Separately, Meta also uses public posts and comments from UK Facebook and Instagram accounts to train its wider AI systems. The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) pushed back on this in 2024, and Meta agreed to make the opt-out process simpler and give UK users a longer window to object before it resumed. If you would rather your public posts were not used this way, go to your Facebook or Instagram account's privacy settings, search for "AI" or "", and use the objection form Meta provides there. This applies to public posts only, not private messages or anything in Meta AI chats.

What Should You Not Share with Meta AI?
Treat Meta AI like any online service you have just signed up for: useful, but not somewhere you hand over sensitive details. Do not share:
- Passwords or PINs of any kind
- Bank account or card numbers
- Your NHS number
- National Insurance number
- Your full name combined with your home address
- Passport numbers or photos of any ID document
Meta AI does not need any of this to answer a question, and there is no reason to give it. Our guide on what not to share with any AI tool has the full breakdown, and most of it applies here too.
Do You Have to Use Meta AI?
No. You can ignore it entirely. Do not open the Meta AI chat, do not type @MetaAI in any conversation, and it has no interaction with your messages whatsoever. You are under no obligation to use it.
If you are in group chats and want to be sure Meta AI cannot be called upon by other members, there is a WhatsApp setting called Advanced Chat Privacy. You will find it in the group's settings. According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, turning it on also blocks chat exports and stops media from being downloaded automatically. Worth switching on for any group where personal conversations take place.
One option if you are curious but cautious: WhatsApp began rolling out Incognito Chat in May 2026. In Incognito mode, your messages to Meta AI are processed privately, the conversation does not persist after you close it, and even Meta cannot read what was said. WhatsApp's announcement put it simply: "no one can read your conversation, not even us." It is rolling out to users gradually, so check your Meta AI chat settings to see whether it is available to you yet. "Meta AI Trading" Is Not Meta's Chatbot. It's a Scam
We checked the Financial Conduct Authority's live warning list while researching this guide and found something worth flagging on its own. A firm calling itself "META AI TRADING" is on the FCA's list of unauthorised firms, meaning it has no permission to offer financial services in the UK and is likely a scam. A near-identical operation, "Meta Trading Experts", has been flagged separately.
These firms have nothing to do with Meta, the company behind WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram. They borrow the "Meta AI" name because it sounds official and because AI-branded investment schemes have become a common scam format. If you deal with an unauthorised firm, you lose the protections that come with regulated investing: no Financial Ombudsman Service if something goes wrong, and no Financial Services Compensation Scheme payout if the firm disappears with your money.
If anyone contacts you, or you come across an advert, promising high returns from "Meta AI" investing or trading, treat it as a scam and do not send money. You can check whether a firm is genuinely authorised on the FCA Register before dealing with any investment company. Our guide to AI investment scams covers the wider pattern, including the fake celebrity videos often used to promote schemes like this one.
FAQ: Meta AI Safety Questions
Can Meta AI read my regular WhatsApp messages?
No. WhatsApp messages between you and other people are end-to-end encrypted. Meta AI cannot see them unless you send a message directly to the Meta AI chat or type @MetaAI in a group conversation.
How do I remove Meta AI from WhatsApp?
You cannot delete the Meta AI contact from WhatsApp entirely. But you do not have to use it. If you never open the Meta AI chat or type @MetaAI, it has no interaction with your messages. For group chats, turn on Advanced Chat Privacy in the group's settings to restrict what Meta AI can access there.
What is Incognito Chat with Meta AI?
Incognito Chat is a private conversation mode that WhatsApp started rolling out in May 2026. In this mode, your messages to Meta AI are processed in a secure environment and are not stored after the conversation ends. Not even Meta can read them. Open the Meta AI chat and look for an Incognito option to check whether it has reached your account yet.
What happens if I accidentally message Meta AI?
That message is processed and stored by Meta, and you will get a reply from Meta AI. Delete the conversation from your chat list if you would rather not keep it. If you want to try Meta AI without leaving a record, use Incognito Chat mode instead.
Does Meta AI share my data with advertisers?
Meta says it does not sell personal data to third parties. It may, however, use information from your Meta AI conversations to improve its AI systems, and it can draw on your Facebook or Instagram profile to personalise what it says to you. The UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) sets out your rights under UK data law if you want to know more or raise a concern.
Is Meta AI safe for older people?
Yes, provided you treat it as you would any online service. Do not share passwords, financial details, or ID numbers. Use Incognito Chat if you want your conversations to stay private. Age UK also has good guidance on using technology safely if you would like a broader read on that.
Is "Meta AI Trading" a real Meta product?
No. The Financial Conduct Authority has listed "META AI TRADING" as an unauthorised firm, and a similarly named firm, "Meta Trading Experts", has also been flagged. Neither is connected to Meta. If you see adverts or receive messages promoting AI-powered trading using the Meta name, treat it as a scam and do not invest.
