Is Google Gemini Safe? A Simple Guide
Gemini is safe for everyday questions but stores your chats for 18 months. Learn what to share, how to adjust settings, and your UK data rights.

Quick Summary: Google Gemini is Google's AI assistant, useful for drafting letters, planning trips, and answering everyday questions. This guide covers what it does, how to start, and whether it is safe to use. Gemini is safe for most everyday tasks, but Google stores your conversations for up to 18 months and links Gemini to your Google account. We cover what to share, what to avoid, how to adjust your settings in two steps, and what rights you have under UK data law.
Google Gemini is Google's AI assistant. It is designed to answer questions, explain topics, and help with everyday tasks like writing or planning.
It connects to your Google account, which makes it easy to access but also raises some privacy questions worth understanding. This guide covers both.
Is Google Gemini safe?
For everyday tasks, yes. Asking Gemini to help you draft a letter, explain a medical term, or plan a day trip carries little risk. The same kind of question you would type into Google Search is fine to ask Gemini.
What is different about Gemini is what happens to your words after you send them. Google stores your Gemini conversations for up to 18 months by default. Google staff may also read selected chats to check the service is working properly, and those reviewed conversations are kept for up to three years. A 72-hour copy is always retained, even if you turn off data storage in your settings.
None of that is unusual for an AI service. The main thing that sets Gemini apart is that it sits close to your broader Google account. If you have turned on its Personal Intelligence feature, Gemini can read your Gmail and Calendar. That means more of your personal life is nearby. Personal Intelligence is switched off by default for personal accounts.
For the official overview of what data Gemini collects and how long it keeps it, see the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub from Google.
What Gemini does well
Gemini is strong at answering general questions and explaining ideas in plain English. It can also help with writing, like drafting an email or turning notes into a tidy paragraph.
It's also useful for quick planning tasks, such as outlining a trip or making a weekly meal plan.
What Gemini can't do
Gemini doesn't know your personal life unless you tell it. It isn't connected to your bank account or your NHS records.
It can also make mistakes, so use it as a helper and check any important facts.
How to start using Gemini
You can use Gemini through Google's website or app at gemini.google.com. It's free to try without installing anything. You type a question, press enter, and it replies.
If the answer is too long, ask it to make it shorter. If it's too technical, ask for a simpler version.
Prompts you can copy and paste
- "Explain inflation in simple terms, like you're talking to a neighbour."
- "Write a polite email asking for a refund from a shop."
- "Give me a simple recipe using chicken, tomatoes, and pasta."
- "Plan a three day trip to York for two adults, no car."
- "Summarise this article in five bullet points: [paste text]."
Gemini vs ChatGPT
Both tools can handle everyday tasks. ChatGPT has a large community of guides and examples, while Gemini feels convenient if you use Google services already. Read our plain English guide to ChatGPT if you want to compare them properly.
If you're brand new to all of this, our guide to what AI actually is is a good place to start first. Then try both Gemini and ChatGPT and see which tone you prefer.
What not to share with Gemini
Think of Gemini as a helpful assistant who works in a shared office. Most conversations are fine, but avoid sharing anything you would not want a stranger to read:
- Your NHS number, National Insurance number, or passport details
- Bank account numbers, sort codes, or card details
- Passwords, PINs, or security codes for any account
- Your full home address (use "near York" rather than a street name)
- Medical conditions or symptoms you would prefer to keep private
- Personal details about other people, including children or relatives
For tasks like writing a complaint letter, try: "Help me write a formal complaint to a utility company about a billing dispute" without including your actual account number or meter reading. Add those real details yourself before sending the final letter.

How Gemini stores your data
Google is open about its data practices. According to the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, here is what happens to your conversations:
- Stored for 18 months by default, then deleted automatically
- You can change the auto-delete window to 3 months, 36 months, or set it to never auto-delete
- If you turn off Gemini Apps Activity, a 72-hour copy is always retained
- Selected chats may be reviewed by Google staff; those are kept for up to three years
- Your conversations may be used to improve Google's AI systems
This is broadly similar to how ChatGPT and other AI tools handle data. Our guide on what not to tell ChatGPT covers the same principles and applies equally to Gemini.
Two privacy settings worth checking
You do not need to change any settings to use Gemini safely. But if you want more control over how long Google keeps your chats, two settings are worth knowing about.
Gemini Apps Activity
Go to gemini.google.com and sign in. Click your profile picture, then choose Data and privacy from your Google Account menu. Find Gemini Apps Activity and turn it off. That prevents long-term storage, though a 72-hour copy is still kept. You can also reduce the auto-delete window from 18 months to 3 months from the same screen.
When we checked this in July 2026, the setting was on by default for personal Google accounts.
Personal Intelligence
This is the feature that lets Gemini read your Gmail and Calendar. It is switched off by default. Turn it on and Gemini can summarise email threads or help you plan around your schedule. To switch it off, open Gemini settings and look for Extensions or Personal Intelligence.
For a full overview of the available controls, Google's Safety Centre page for Gemini lists all the current options.
Your rights under UK data law
Under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, you have rights over what Google does with your personal data. These include:
- Ask Google to correct inaccurate information it holds about you
- Request deletion of your Gemini conversation history through the app settings
- Object to Google using your conversations for AI training purposes
- Request a copy of the data Google holds via your Google account
Not satisfied with Google's response to a data request? You can complain directly to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk), the UK's independent data protection authority. You don't need a solicitor or any specialist knowledge to raise a complaint with them.
Where Gemini fits in daily life
Gemini is handy for everyday questions, from "what does this mean" to "help me plan a weekend." It can also tidy your writing or turn a rough note into a neat message.
If you use Google services already, it may feel like a natural part of your routine. Start small: a shopping list, a short draft, or a question you've been meaning to look up.
Try a short practice chat
Ask a simple question, then ask a follow-up. For example, "Explain interest rates." Then say, "Make it shorter and use a simple example." That back-and-forth helps you see how it responds.
Once you're comfortable, try a practical task like a shopping list or a letter draft.
Know the limits
Gemini can give helpful answers, but it can also be wrong. We've tested Gemini on a range of everyday tasks, and it's solid for general questions and writing help, but it occasionally gets specific UK details wrong (prices, opening times, local services). Use it for drafts, ideas, and explanations, then verify anything important with a trusted source. For anything that could affect your health, money, or legal situation, check with a professional rather than relying on an AI answer.

FAQ
Is Gemini free to use?
The standard version of Gemini is free. Google also offers a paid Gemini Advanced plan with a more capable model. For letter-drafting and everyday questions, the free version is perfectly adequate.
Can Gemini browse the web?
Yes. Google Search is built into Gemini, so it can pull in current information and recent news, unlike some AI tools that only work from older training data. Always check important facts yourself before acting on them.
Is Gemini safer than other tools?
It depends what you mean by safe. Gemini, ChatGPT, and Claude all store conversations and may use them to improve their systems. The thing that sets Gemini apart is its link to your Google account: if you have enabled Personal Intelligence, it can access your Gmail and Calendar, which goes further than most other AI assistants by default. For most everyday tasks the risk level is similar across all three. Our guide to privacy with AI goes into more depth.
Is it safe to let Gemini access my Gmail?
That depends on your comfort level. Enabling Personal Intelligence lets Gemini read your inbox to help with tasks like drafting replies or summarising long threads. It is optional and switched off by default. If you prefer your email to remain private, leave Personal Intelligence switched off.
Does Gemini use my conversations for AI training?
Yes, by default. Google may use your conversations to train and improve its AI systems. Staff members can also review selected chats. Turning off Gemini Apps Activity in your account settings stops long-term storage, though a 72-hour copy is always kept. To opt out more thoroughly, you would need a Google Workspace account with training use disabled by an administrator.
How does Gemini compare with ChatGPT on privacy?
Both store your conversations and may use them to improve their systems. ChatGPT has a temporary chat mode that stores nothing after the session ends. Gemini has no exact equivalent, though turning off Gemini Apps Activity comes close. The main distinction is that Gemini is linked to your broader Google account. If you use Gmail or Google Photos, there is more personal data in the same place. Neither is a poor choice for everyday tasks as long as you avoid sharing sensitive details.
